AI Bot goes rouge, shares deadly recipe for chlorine gas
“Aromatic Water Mix”? New Zealand Supermarket’s AI Bot goes rouge, shares deadly recipe for chlorine gas. Originally designed to offer recipes for leftover food, a meal bot from New Zealand’s Pak’nSave supermarket chain, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, is now distributing hazardous recipes.
Users shared instances where the bot proposed dangerous mixtures, including one that resembled poisonous chlorine gas, and calls it an “aromatic water mix”.
Although the AI learns and adapts over time, the company is disappointed by misuse and will fine-tune controls for safe use.
The website’s terms state that generated recipes are not human-reviewed and users must exercise caution. Despite earlier bugs, recent attempts at bizarre ingredient combinations have failed, hinting at bug fixes.
